Let’s Grow: Planter pots make flower gardening a breeze

Most home gardeners agree that perennials pose less of a problem than annual bedding plants. We agree with this opinion, but since few perennials provide year-round color,  the best flower gardens have both annuals and perennials. Has done most, and over the years  has settled on a really good routine of combining annuals and perennials to create stunning displays from early spring to hard frost. Her secret is our garden. We fill our  beds with different shrubs and perennials that bloom at different times, and plant all our annuals in planter pots. Most of these containers are on our porches and patios, but we have many more in our garden Pots are scattered.Gardening in containers has many advantages over planting in garden beds. First of all, no weeding. Cover shrub and perennial beds with 3 inches of pine bark early in the season, before the weeds take root. There are no weeds at all. Jae. Insects and diseases are minimal. The greatest advantage of container gardening is soil management. Potting soil is looser than most garden soils, allowing it to breathe and drain better. Because plants breathe through their roots,  they thrive in pot mixes and often struggle with heavy, compacted garden soil.  Filling the pot with garden soil or "topsoil" serves no purpose. Heavy soil does not breathe, does not drain, and limits root growth. They always contain weed seeds. Also, when frozen, it expands and destroys the container. Replacing every container of fresh potting soil each year is expensive. Marjorie simply replaces the top 15cm of each pot when switching plants. Sacked potting soil varies in quality. Marjorie likes the Jolly Gardener ProLine C/L Grower Mix and the Sungro Professional Potting Mix. Professional growers generally prefer her ProMix BX, but it's hard to find at garden centers. I definitely don't recommend Miracle Gro Potting Soil, but it's far better than most garden soils you  have in your garden.Marjorie mixes a handful of Espoma her plants her tone with her container mix. Insert each plant as you go. Later in the season, she fortifies the plants with  liquid fertilizer. She likes Espoma Bloom best, but Miracle Gro works well too. Containers need to be watered frequently, so Marjorie strategically placed hoses and watering cans  to make this task quick and easy. She recommends using "pot feet" or another type of support to elevate the planter for easy drainage, and she uses an inexpensive pot that easily adapts to different pot sizes. Poly likes her device down her under her plant her stand.
