The Green Bay Packers lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Friday night's preseason opener at Levi's Stadium. Matt LaFleur seeded his 33 players, including Aaron Rodgers and most of his defensive starters. Jordan Love threw an interception his three times, and he also had two long touchdowns. An Amari Rodgers touchdown put the Packers ahead in the fourth quarter, but the 49ers fought back with a scoring drive to clinch the win. Here are the key takeaways from his 28-21 loss to the Packers.
Three interceptions look bad in the box for his score, but Tyler his Davis dropped the first clean, Romeo his Dubs stole his second catch, and two players went the wrong route. I was. It's a much-needed context. Love also threw Dubs and Danny Davis for touchdown passes from 30+ yards and he led the Packers into 49ers territory on 5 of their first 6 possessions, so a lot of good things happened. There was, but there was also bad news. Love still displayed accuracy issues, especially when submitting flat, and some decisions made with the ball, especially under pressure, were questionable at best. Accuracy and decision-making are two things a quarterback can control. Love is still a young and talented player who hasn't seen much on the field, but his inconsistency in key parts of the position makes it a bit annoying going into his third year. Only four and his first catch didn't come until the fourth quarter, but the sophomore still showed some of the juices he didn't have as a heavy player last season. Rodgers, now down to 202 pounds, had a successful 50-yard kickoff return after breaking containment on the outside and a 22-yard touchdown catch that included a broken tackle and an endzone dive. . He also turned a broken gadget play into a sizable 4-yard gain, and perhaps Rodgers, likely the leader in kick returns, can finally make an impact in the return leg. He looks like he's growing even more explosively heading into his sophomore start. His two starters in last year's offensive line, John Lunyan and Josh Meyers, looked ready for Week 1 in his preseason debut. The duo combined into one good set of combo blocks in the running game and neither gave way in the passing game. Runyan and Myers need to build a strong base in the center of the offensive line as there are many moving parts around it. Yosh Nyman started Friday night at left tackle with Jake Hanson at right tackle and Lois Newman at right tackle.
According to Pro Football Focus, Romeo Dubs had 28 snaps, 15 route runs and seven goals in his first NFL game. He dropped two of his passes, including one that led to an interception, but continued to open up as a threat, especially in the vertical direction. With a touchdown in the first quarter, Dubs won over the press on his release outside, stacking cornerbacks upright and creating a layup for Jordan on his Love his throw. He opened at least two more times in the vertical stretch, but either the ball wasn't there or the contact affected the timing. He is not afraid to play great and consistently catches the ball with his hands. Overall, Doubs looks like the real deal. He really is a physical being who can run and stay away from reporting. First-round pick Devonte Wyatt didn't play after suffering a head injury during practice this week, but the depth of the Packers' defensive line was still evident. Both Jack Heflin and Chris Slayton wreaked havoc in his game, especially against runs, but also passes. Rookie Jonathan Ford looked lively, but he just missed a few big games. These are the three players battling to become the sixth defender on the list. Don't be surprised if he one of them forces the Packers to keep his six. Heflin looked like he was one of the top 53 players on Friday night's roster. The depth in this position is really good. Is there an edge rusher, cornerback or safety his player who made a big move in the position race to earn a backup role and his spot on Friday night's roster? Depth of defense still seems to be unstable. It was disappointing that Jonathan Garvin, Radarius Hamilton and Innis Gaines were out, while Tipa Galeai and Darin Leavitt were sidelined with injuries. With his two preseason games still to come, there's still a lot to figure out here. Shemar Jean-Charles and Kingsley Enagbare made some flash plays on Friday night. Rookie Gabe Brkic had his only field goal attempt fumbled at left end. It wasn't even close. The rookie may be talented (and he led to three extra points), but inconsistencies from his previous training camp oozed into preseason games. The Packers need the return of veteran Mason Crosby in Week 1. Soon to be 38 years old, returning from a right knee injury that required surgery, he remains a mystery at this point. But no Super Bowl contender can have a kicker and freakish rookie, especially when the offense is still on the line early in the season.
